“They tried to kill us. They did not succeed. Let’s eat,” commented a community figure.

This age-old Jewish joke feels notably significant in Greater Manchester in the face of contemporary threats.

For the representative, the good-humoured remark captures the resilient character that defines his traditional Jewish population.

This dynamic neighbourhood was identified by an Islamic State terror cell, whose plan to “slay as many Jews as possible” in a violent weapon attack was prevented. Two men were sentenced this week on extremism crimes.

Neighbourhood Solidarity and Daily Challenges

In the words of the councillor, the disrupted scheme has not diminished the neighbourhood’s commitment to coexist with its neighbours. “My business partner is a devout Muslim and we have an excellent relationship,” said the father of nine. “You find good and bad in any society. The vast majority just want to live in harmony.”

The plotters saw the Jewish population solely through the warped perspective of prejudice.

They showed no interest in the varied ways of life, financial situations, levels of observance and opinions within the city’s Jewish communities, nor in the serious issues like financial hardship that impact many British communities.

A local leader runs a children and families centre that aids hundreds of families, including large ultra-Orthodox families and some Muslim women. The centre provides parenting support, clinics, advice services, learning programs, and vital food and debt support.

“People outside believe the primary issue is security – that’s rubbish,” she said. “Naturally we’re concerned and we reflect, but the women I work with are finding it hard to manage with daily routines, pressure and large families. We are here to help.”

“Rising prices – kosher food is very expensive – utility costs, people who can’t afford basic essentials, accommodation, welfare issues – that’s what I’m addressing.”

Increased Vigilance and Strong Spirit

Despite these challenges, two unifying themes have strengthened under pressure. One is a marked shift “in favour of social cohesion and involvement,” according to a major policy research institute. The other is a atmosphere of vigilance on a level unseen in most UK towns.

“We can get to an incident in two minutes,” said the head of a Jewish neighbourhood watch group that shares intelligence with authorities.

Appeals have been made for the authorities to introduce a new extremism strategy, with an focus on addressing the doctrinal challenge posed by extremism, distinct from faith or people.
