UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
