Ten years back, Barry competed in League Two. Now, he is focused supporting the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His path from athlete to trainer began through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his destiny.

Rapid Rise

Barry's progression stands out. Starting with his first major job, he developed a standing with creative training and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on international positions across multiple countries. He's coached stars like world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the top in his words.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. The approach include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” Barry says. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” he declares. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend most of our time to. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes but to beat them and create our own ones. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process enabling productivity in the 50 days, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach ought to embody all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the versatility, the robustness, the honesty. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“To make it light, we have to give them an approach that enables them to operate as they do in club games, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and increase execution.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he was worried about the presentation, since his group featured big names including former players. So, to build his skill set, he went into difficult settings imaginable to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. The FA consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
