The Devastating Transformation Just One Year Has Brought in the US
In late October 2024, the situation was completely distinct. Before the American presidential vote, thoughtful Americans could admit the nation's deep flaws – its injustices and inequality – but they still could identify it as the United States. A democracy. A country where constitutional order meant something. A nation led by a respectable and ethical leader, despite his elderly years and declining health.
These days, this autumn, countless Americans scarcely know the land we inhabit. Individuals believed to be undocumented migrants are rounded up and pushed into transport, sometimes denied due process. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed for a grotesque ballroom. The president is persecuting his adversaries or supposed enemies and requesting legal authorities hand over a massive sum of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are dispatched across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The military command, relabeled the War Department, has practically liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends possibly reaching close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Colleges, attorney offices, news companies are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are regarded as aristocracy.
“The United States, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has tipped over the edge toward dictatorship and extremism,” Garrett Graff, commented recently. “Finally, faster than I thought feasible, it transpired in America.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.
However, we understand that the leader was duly elected. Following his highly troubling first term and following the warnings that came with the understanding of the conservative plan – following the leader directly said publicly he would be a dictator just on day one – a majority of citizens selected him instead of Kamala Harris.
As terrifying as today's circumstances are, it’s even scarier to understand that we have only been several months into this administration. How will an additional three years of this downfall position us? And suppose that period becomes a more extended duration, since there is not anyone to restrain this ruler from determining that a third term is required, perhaps for defense purposes?
Granted, not everything is hopeless. We will have congressional elections the coming year that could establish an alternate balance of power, if Democrats recapture either chamber of the legislature. There exist government representatives who are striving to impose some accountability, for example representatives that are initiating an inquiry regarding the effort to fund seizure from legal authorities.
And a national vote in 2028 could initiate the path toward restoration just as the prior selection placed us on this unfortunate course.
There are millions of Americans marching in the streets throughout communities, like they performed last weekend at democracy demonstrations.
An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of America is awakening”, just as it did post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or throughout anti-war demonstrations or during the Nixon controversy.
During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance.
He claims he recognizes the signals of that revival and notices it unfolding at present. As evidence, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the widespread, multi-faction opposition regarding a television host's removal and the almost universal defiance by media to sign military mandates they solely cover approved content.
“The slumbering entity consistently stays dormant till certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, specific cruelty so noisy, that it is forced other than to stir.”
It's a hopeful perspective, and I respect Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.
At the same time, the major inquiries persist: will the nation return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its standing globally and its adherence to constitutional order?
Or must we acknowledge that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is true; that everything could be gone. My positive feelings, nevertheless, convinces me that we must try, through all methods available.
Personally, working in journalism analysis, that involves urging journalists to live up, more fully, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For others, it might involve engaging with congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to defend electoral access.
Under twelve months back, we were in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or after another term? The fact is, we don’t know. The only option is to strive to persevere.
