Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.
A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
