Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the team's ten-game winless start to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the team - are part of the names to be considered by the club leadership.
Edwards is presently at another club, which would pose a possible hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton Town manager - who made over a century of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they start the process of appointing a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work which means the club would not need to provide any compensation.
