Israelis mark second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
Citizens have gathered around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
- Future governance of the area
Civilian Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location feels like home any longer and until every captive return no one will be secure."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can relax again. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that around seventy percent of the population desire the war to end in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and zone areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the night falls, the fear comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my smallest child who places his face on me all night."
"Every second we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Medical Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had accepted the bodies of several people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city indicated another two victims had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south region, health workers reported.
