Despite Runaway Success, Expedition 33 Developers Plan to Maintain Team Compact
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn't just an impressive Game of the Year contender, but also a massive commercial success. Studio the development team and publisher their publishing partner announced that this title surpassed five million copies in sales, this is in spite of its status as a launch-day addition on Xbox Game Pass.
Its success came as a shock to the developers. I firmly believed that we'd create an enjoyable experience achieving reasonable commercial success,” a key executive commented.
A technical director noted the game's critical score, rated 93 by critics, came as the greatest surprise” for everyone versus our early predictions and the actual outcome of the field was. Because when it dropped everybody in the studio were cheering loudly. It felt absolutely wild.”
That success has led to Sandfall developing new free content for players including novel settings, adversaries, along with challenging bosses, reportedly will release in the next few months.
That said, while the game is growing, fans shouldn't anticipate the studio to grow. Our team includes a great team under clear creative leadership possessing strong ideas for our work and also for new ideas. Our goal is to maintain the human scale that worked for this game and perhaps create large projects one by one,” the producer added.
The studio's scale sparked significant conversation when the game came out. Certain industry figures, like Hideo Kojima, looked at the development group as the model for creative teams. While Sandfall was and is relatively lean versus large developers, one glance at the title's staff list reveals many individuals were involved; Sandfall partnered with overseas animators for animation work, to illustrate.
“We plan to recruit slightly more certainly when facing next an upcoming production peak in the coming years,” they said. “Yet I picture rather a creative atelier comprising a handful really talented people that create collective masterpieces.” They emphasized that Sandfall’s vision as a studio “aims to keep the successful elements that enabled this success originally.”
While it may be premature for the studio to reveal exact details what’s next — and trust me, I attempted to learn more — the team does know their essential identity. “Strategic combat, forms the foundation of this project,” a developer said. “It's still premature to be able to tell our next interests, however, it's crucial to stay true to the DNA of studio with [a] strong narrative universe plus innovative play that inspires the team.”
They noted that the project began with their director developing his passion title. And hopefully that philosophy we will be able to do in coming projects.”
