Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
